Why is My AC Making Noise?

Newer ACs are quieter than before so we do not hear it working most. This helps us enjoy the cool air without any interference. But sometimes ACs make unusual noises due to various reasons and in such cases, we must make sure to get it checked. Get it fixed at the earliest to avoid costly repairs or even replacement of the unit. Although we all wish our air conditioners worked quietly, we know that’s not always the case. Depending on your AC unit’s age, where it was installed, and whether or not you schedule AMC for your AC, you might notice your air conditioner making a few loud noises.

Loose or broken parts: An AC consists of many small and big parts which all play an important role in the proper functioning of the AC. So if any of the parts, mainly mechanical parts, fails or breaks or falls loose, it can result in producing unusual noises. There can also be a problem with the fan.

Foreign material: There can be debris or dust that must have entered the system which causes a buzzing or rattling noise. It can also be insects and such creatures that have entered the AC. In such cases, switch off the AC and call a technician to clean the AC and get the problem fixed.

Filter needs to be changed: If you have not changed your filter for a long time, there can be dust and dirt accumulated in the filters that cause the AC to work more than it should be. So the unit has to work more to cool down the room. This can cause the unit to make more noise. Check it and clean or change your filters if necessary.

Malfunctioning compressor: The compressor can get very noisy if it doesn't work properly. The compressor helps to circulate the coolant gas. There can also be gas leaks. You can doubt if there is a compressor problem if you hear such noise.

Frozen condenser coils: If there is a refrigerant leak, the condenser coils can freeze. This leads to poor performance of the AC unit. It can also be a reason for noise from the AC. This is a serious problem that has to be fixed as soon as possible. Frozen evaporator coils can cause your system to make a buzzing noise. Evaporator coils can freeze due to restricted and reduced airflow or dirty evaporator coils.

Ice or water in the unit: Sometimes there can be popping or cracking sounds from the AC. It can happen due to water or ice forming inside the AC. As we are dealing with electric appliances, it is not safe to operate units that have water or ice inside it. So it is always advisable to get it properly checked before you switch it on. Get the service of well-experienced technicians.
